Frequency Asked Questions

  1. How do we arrange a “no-cost” survey of our lighting system?
Click on the "Contact" tab above or call Tom at 630-594-4986 and request a “no-cost” survey. One of our Program Advisors will contact you and complete a Survey Approval form.

  2. Are we required to make upfront commitments or sign any agreements in order to receive a ComEd Assessment Report?
No, there are no upfront commitments or contracts to have a survey and Assessment Report prepared. We will need a copy of a recent ComEd bill prior to conducting a survey of your lighting system and we ask that your decision-makers agree to a 20 minute meeting to review the Assessment Report results upon completion.

  3. Who provides the funding for the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program instant incentives?
The incentives are funded through the “Energy Efficiency Program” charge every business pays each month on their electric bill. These dollars are accumulated throughout the previous year and are distributed on a first-come first-served basis in the current year.

  4. If we decide to move forward with lighting improvements, do we have to pay the total cost of the improvements and wait for ComEd to pay incentives to us at a later date?
No, you will only be responsible for the net cost of improvements after the program incentives are applied. As the Service
Provider, Extra Electric will complete all required incentive paperwork, install your new LED lighting system and bill ComEd for the incentive portion of the total improvement cost.

  5. What are the overall benefits of upgrading my existing legacy lighting to solid-state LED lighting?
First, LED lighting is significantly more efficient than legacy lighting, i.e. fluorescent, metal halide, high pressure sodium, halogen, incandescent, etc because it provides comparable light at a greatly reduced wattage. The science behind this efficiency is heat loss factor. 80-90% of the wattage used in legacy lighting is burned off in heat and only 10-20% provides light. That’s why these lamps are hot to the touch. With LED lamps the opposite is true. The heat loss factor is only 10% and 90% of the wattage provides light. The lower wattage equals lower energy usage and reduced energy cost.
Second, Commercial-grade LED lighting has a significantly longer life span than legacy lighting, resulting in reduced maintenance cost.                                                                                                                                                                            Third, LED lamps are not negatively effected by turning them on and off like most legacy lighting. Therefore, use of occupancy sensors with LED lighting is more effective than with legacy lighting. Plus, there is no "warm-up" time with LED lamps - instant on and off.

  6. Do the installation cost and products come with any guarantees?
Yes, Extra Electric provides a one-year warranty on labor and a limited five-year warranty on most LED lighting products.

  7. Will the installation disrupt my business operations?
No, you can expect minimal disruption of your business operations.  In most cases, our installers will not need to turn off any circuits and they work fixture to fixture.

  8. Do LED lamps flicker and buzz like fluorescent llighting?
No, our LED lamps do not flicker or buzz and there are no ballasts to replace.

  9. Will the LED lighting include occupancy sensors?
Wherever it makes sense, the LED lighting will include occupancy sensors and daylighting controls.
